“Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, whose death is noted in another place, was born near Danbury, Conn., in 1802. Her early married life was passed in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 1835 she removed with her family to this place,-then a village of about 4,000 inhabitants,-and for nearly fifty years lived in the house at the corner of Farm and Linn streets, where last year was erected the fine colonial building of Mrs. Ida L. McWhorter.
In early life Mrs. Smith united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and her earnest christian life will be remembered by all who knew her. The call of her church bell seldom escaped notice. She expressed regret that she had become too infirm to respond to the call to worship. Last evening the dying ear caught the welcome sound, and whispering: ‘Yes! All is well, all is well,’ she closed her eyes and fell asleep.”
