"Walter Fowler, who for the past 23 years had been keeper of the Cornell boathouse on the Inlet and known to every Cornell oarsman during that time, died Saturday afternoon at his home, 321 Westport street after a two weeks' illness of typhoid fever.
He was born at Union Springs, September 28, 1838, and had lived in Ithaca for the past 40 years. During the Civil War he served on the U.S.S. Lancaster and was sergeant of  Sidney Post, G.A.R."
