"The residents of Fall Creek and vicinity were startled by a loud explosion which shook the ground and made things generally jingle at about 6:30 this morning. The violent noise was caused by an overcharge of giant powder fired by Wm. G. Johnson, who is blasting the rock in the ravine at the 'Nook.' No one was injured."

"William G. Johnson died this morning at six o'clock at his late home, "The Nook." He had been ailing since January 19 last when he was injured by a sleigh. He spent last evening at the residence of his sister, Mrs. J. B. Sprague and left for his home at 10:30. On his way home he was attacked by pain in the heart. Dr. Baker was called but, being engaged, sent his assistant Dr. Judd and he pronounced Mr. Johnson to be suffering from pneumonia and neuralgia of the heart. The doctor gave him medicine and remained with his patient until he went to sleep. This morning he was again attacked with pains and went into that sleep that ends all of earth's pains and troubles.
William G. Johnson was the son of Ben. Johnson, Esq., and a brother of Mrs. J. B. [Louisa Johnson] Sprague, Mrs. C. M. [Isabella] Titus, Mrs. Jane Bostwick and Jesse [Johnson] and C. D. Johnson. He leaves also a widow [Melissa] and one child, a daughter. The daughter, Louise is married [to Charles Marston] and resides in Wolverhampton, England.
Mr. Johnson enlisted in the marines during the Rebellion; was commissioned a lieutenant and served on the United States steamer Vanderbilt, a present to the government by Commodore Vanderbilt. Mr. Johnson said that he rode over 40,000 miles on that vessel. He was a very polished gentleman, a graceful writer and his pen furnished many beautiful articles for magazines and papers. He excelled in landscape gardening. He was 62 years of age.
The funeral will be held at the residence of Mrs. J. B. Sprague at 4 o'clock tomorrow, corner of Albany street and Titus avenue. Interment in the old city cemetery."
