"Mr. George McCormick died at his residence No. 59 North Geneva street, at 8 o'clock last evening. The younger business men in Ithaca have nearly all entered upon the scene since the subject of this brief sketch retired from active life, but to the older residents he was well known. He was born near Corning in 1808 and came to Ithaca in 1824. Receiving his education at the old academy he left his books to enter the hardware store of his uncle, the late J. M. McCormick. About the age of twenty-one he and the late Charles E. Hardy bought out J. M. McCormick and carried on the establishment for a number of years. The deceased was afterwards engaged in the hardware business with the late E. G. Pelton."
