    Surname listed on 1930 census as Deiths, no record of him in 1930 Ithaca city directory under Deiths, Deeths, or Deitz. He is listed on p195 of the 1931 Ithaca city directory as Herbert Deitz.
    Marriage record, Ithaca, NY, No. 3261, deposition by Herbert Deeths that he procured a marriage license in the City of Ithaca on July 8, 1926, under the false name of John Smith and was married to Nettie Smith by Rev. J. H. Gagnier under that name. Stated he had assumed the name of John Smith after breaking his parole for a minor offense in New Jersey and moving to Ithaca. After his marriage he "voluntarily reported to the local probation officer who notified the New Jersey officials." He agreed to report to parole in Ithaca and was not returned to New Jersey. Since his marriage he has used the name Herbert Deeths and "he is now satisfactorily and continuously employed in a local factory, conducting himself as as law abiding citizen and is happy in his domestic life." He also stated that his father's name is Herbert Deeths and that "he does not know his mother's maiden name, that he does not know where she lives and that he has not lived with his parents since early childhood."
