"There has been a school building at this location since 1807. The first school was destroyed by a mob in 1816. Ithaca Academy was then built on this site. The Academy was a coeducational school with a curriculum that could prepare students from Ithaca and beyond for college. In 1875, it became Ithaca High School. In 1912 a fire destroyed the building and a new school, the current DeWitt Mall building, was erected at this same location. It continued as the high school until 1960 when the current high school was built. This building then served as the junior high until 1971."
