Previously the home of Captain Abram Van Order, this house was acquired by the Social Service League in 1924 for use as the North Side House, a community center for the North Side neighborhood. "A new community center for the North Side of the city progressed a step toward revitalization yesterday at the meeting of the Social Service League Council when it was announced that a close friend of the League had given $5,000 to be used as the nucleus of a building fund....
The North Side project began three years ago when a little old house at 206 Third Street, formerly the home of Captain Van Order, was purchased by the League, renovated and improved, and finally, in November, 1925, thrown open to the public. It was wired for electric lighting, a furnace was installed, and later a bath room was made available. Most of the furnishings were given by interested friends."

Programming included a weekly baby clinic, after school program, drama, dance, and cooking classes, a Hungarian social club, an Italian social club, and an Americanization class.
