143 East State St. Historic name: Andrus Block, Home Dairy Company
"Four-story, four-bay, Italianate-style, brick commercial building; street-level facade retains continuous multilight transoms above display window and recessed side entrances; storefront retains oak panel sign with “Home Dairy Co.’’ in gilt letters; storefront comer quoins consist of vermiculated stone blocks alternating with incised stone blocks, capped by vermiculated stone consoles; upper stories retain arched windows with continuous stone sills, vermiculated stone keystones and plinths, and historic one-over-one sash; corbelled brick comice consists of stepped brick architrave, frieze with recessed panels, with denticulated stamped metal comice above; comers marked by corbelled brackets capped with stone globe finials. Built ca. 1872; storefront alterations 1929, 2003-2004.
Historical note: Fire destroyed the original Andrus and Church bookstore, a three-story brick building, in 1871. They replaced the lost building with the present four-story Italianate-style building. Until 1929, when the Home Dairy Company opened, the building had a cast iron storefront. The Home Dairy operated until 2002."
