143 East State St. Historic name: Andrus Block, Home Dairy Company

"Four-story, four-bay, Italianate-style, brick commercial building; street-level facade retains continuous multilight transoms above display window and recessed side entrances; storefront retains oak panel sign with “Home Dairy Co.’’ in gilt letters; storefront comer quoins consist of vermiculated stone blocks alternating with incised stone blocks, capped by vermiculated stone consoles; upper stories retain arched windows with continuous stone sills, vermiculated stone keystones and plinths, and historic one-over-one sash; corbelled brick comice consists of stepped brick architrave, frieze with recessed panels, with denticulated stamped metal comice above; comers marked by corbelled brackets capped with stone globe finials. Built ca. 1872; storefront alterations 1929, 2003-2004.
Historical note: Fire destroyed the original Andrus and Church bookstore, a three-story brick building, in 1871. They replaced the lost building with the present four-story Italianate-style building. Until 1929, when the Home Dairy Company opened, the building had a cast iron storefront. The Home Dairy operated until 2002."

National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for Ithaca Downtown Historic District, December 18, 2004

"In 1831, Ebenezer Mac, owner of the Ithaca Journal from 1823 to 1833, and partner William Andrus purchased this site for their printing and publishing business. Fire destroyed the original building, and the current one was constructed in 1871.

In 1929, Home Dairy started as a buttermilk and donut shop in this location. At some point, the original cast-iron storefront was replaced by the existing wood and glass façade. Special details include the oak signboard with gilt lettering, arched windows, and stone globes punctuating the ends of each cornice."
