213 South Plain Street
27 S. Plain St.
Description:
This is a small, 3-bay, 1 ½ story, clapboard sided residence with a front facing gable. The front entrance is recessed in the southernmost bay. There is a wall dormer with shed roof on the north side of the house. There is a smaller dormer on the south side. The windows are 6/6 double-hung sash.
Established African-American occupancy/ownership during the period of significance:
1903 – Irene Moore
1903 – Orson Cook, janitor
1883-4 – Henry Moore (27 S. Plain)
1872 – Henry Moore is listed at 29 S. Plain, which would have been the house to the south, but the 1866 map indicates that Henry owned both the house at 27 and the house at 29, so it seems likely that this house was actually his home.
1866 – Henry Moore, owner, barber born in Maryland – Henry appears in the 1860 census – freedom seeker?
