"Work has begun on excavating the site for the $1,700,000 materials and materials processing laboratory of the College of Engineering at Cornell.
The building, scheduled for completion by the late Summer of 1952, will be about the size of Statler Hall. It will stand between Grove Place and the Old Armory on land formerly occupied in part by the Willcox house, which has been demolished. Prof. Walter F. Willcox and Mrs. Willcox moved about a year ago to 121 Heights Court.
Architects of the new structure, to be finished in the outside principally of limestone and brick, are Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, New York City firm that designed the Empire State Building. The general contractor is white Construction Company of New York. Arthur Prince of Ithaca has the excavation contract.
The laboratory will be the second unit in the Cornell engineering development program. First unit was Olin Hall, completed in 1941.
The old trolley bridge across Cascadilla Gorge and the footpath have been blocked off for the duration of heavy construc-tion. The path, a shortcut to the campus from Collegetown, will later be relocated.
Cornell authorities warned motorists that trucks are now entering Campus Rd. at the north side of Cascadilla Bridge."
