"124 Cleveland Ave
B Wheat St, no #
Description:
This is a vernacular, L-shaped, 1½-story, mid-19th century residence with a shallow-pitched, cross-gabled roof. The house has wide eaves supported by brackets. An enclosed porch has been added at the front. There is an open porch tucked into the ell on the west side of the house. The 2-story ell is an addition and there is another small addition at the rear. Most windows are 1/1 double-hung sash. The house has been sided with vinyl siding.
Established African-American occupancy/ownership during the period of significance:
1930 – Mrs. Elmira M. Brown
1930 – John Bird
1900 – Thomas Allen
1898 – Thomas Allen, mason, listed at #18 Wheat St
1866 – the map indicates that Mrs. Brooks lives at this location and, if the lot lines are correct, it does appear that this is the house where she lived. This, however, conflicts with the census evidence which indicates that she lived on the west side of #20 Wheat Street, not to the east of #20."
