"213 South Albany Street was built prior to 1851 in the Greek Revival style. The house is older and of smaller proportion than most of the houses built on the block. The house retains its original form and massing and is architecturally significant as an example of an early modest Greek Revival style residence. The garage is architecturally significant as an example of an early automobile garage.
213 South Albany Street is significant for its association with Ebenezer Vickerey and Alexander King, early landowners who were prominent in village political and business activities. The house is on the west half of 26 of the lots laid out south of Green Street by Simeon DeWitt. The house appears on the 1851 Bevans map of Ithaca, but its construction date is unknown. Records suggest that it was first owned by Ebenezer Vickery. Vickerey was named “collector” at the 1821 meeting that formed the town of Ithaca and was sheriff in 1825.29
By 1864, Alexander King owned the property. King was a partner in A. King & Sons, a lumber and grain company that was also noted as being active in real estate in Ithaca in the 1850s. King also owned nearby 301 West Green Street. In 1864, Orin and Meleson Savage purchased the property from King. Orin Savage was a tinner, and the Savages owned the house until 1881 when they sold it to Clement T. Stephens. Stephens operated an agricultural warehouse on State Street and in the late 1890s was a partner in Stephens & Masters, a hardware store at the corner of State and Aurora streets. Upon the sale of this house in 1897, Stephens moved to the larger and more elegant brick Italianate style house at 125 West Green Street."
