Description:
309 West Green Street is located on the southeast corner of West Green and Fayette streets. It is a two-and-a-half story residence built ca. 1909 in the Colonial Revival style. The house is rectangular in plan, oriented east-west, with a one-and-a-half-story wing projecting from the east façade and wrapping around part of the south façade. A one-story, one-bay automobile garage is attached to the south façade of the wing.
The house has a side-gabled roof with overhanging eaves and pent roofs on the gable ends. The primary, north, façade has a prominent center gabled dormer with a pent roof topping a group of three diamond-light windows. Walls are clad in stucco on the first story and clapboard on the second story, separated by a wood stringcourse. The gables are clad in wood shingles. The raised foundation is rock-faced concrete block with regularly spaced one-light basement windows. Windows are generally 6/1 and symmetrically arranged, with a shallow bay projection of the center three second-story windows.
Classical pilasters frame the corners of the first story. A deep one-story, flat-roofed, partial-width porch covers the center of the north façade. It has a deep cornice a square classical full-height porch posts. A single glazed wood door is located on the west side of the porch, with two 8/1 window to the east.
The east wing is recessed from the north façade. It is two bays wide, with a flat or low-pitched roof and a simple hipped-roof portico sheltering the doorway in the east corner. The east wing wraps around the south corner, terminating approximately halfway across the south façade. The west corner of the wing is cut away, creating a porch around a south entryway, supported by classical posts. A one-story, stucco-clad, flat-roofed garage projects from the south façade of the wing. The door to the garage is on its west façade. A two-track concrete driveway extends from the street to the garage.
Significance:
Contributing. Architecturally significant. Garage contributing and architecturally significant.
309 West Green Street is architecturally significant as an excellent example of a Colonial Revival style residence. The house retains most original exterior features including a mix of stucco and wood shingle wall treatment, 6/1 windows, center bay window, side gabled roof with centered front gable, shed dormer with grouped diamond-light windows, corner pilasters, and a wide porch with classical detailing. The house retains a high level of architectural integrity. The attached garage, constructed between 1919 and 1929, is architecturally significant as an early automobile garage with exterior finishes that are compatible with those of the house.
The house appears to have been constructed between 1904 and 1910, though there was a house on the property by 1851. Maps from 1851 through 1898 indicate a narrower house oriented north to south on the lot. The 1910 Sanborn company map shows the house with its current footprint. It is not known whether this house incorporated some of the earlier structure or was a complete replacement of the earlier house.
The property was owned by the Whiton family from 1853 to 1888, one of a group of properties they owned in the neighborhood. The Whiton family also owned 309 West Green Street and a house on the northwest corner of Green and Albany streets.
In 1888, David M. Dean, a prominent Ithaca trial lawyer, purchased the property. He sold it to his sister Kate in 1902, who sold it to David L. and Mary Horton Dean in 1909. It is likely that David L. and Mary Dean had the existing house built soon thereafter, as it appears on the 1910 Sanborn company map. It is possible that the new house incorporated the east section of the house previously located on the lot. Mary Dean sold the property in 1932.
Alterations:
The 1910 Sanborn map does not indicate the presence of the front porch, but it is likely that the porch was constructed in 1909. The attached garage was constructed between 1919 and 1929.
