White Home Saved by Firemen (Jan 4 1949)
The Ithaca Journal, Jan 5 1949, P. 3, Col. 2
Home of Wester A. White, golf professional at the Ithaca Country Club. Former Asai property located between the Cornell and Country Club golf courses.
"Through the efforts of the firemen and the cooperation of the Cornell Dairy Department which supplied a truck loaded with cans of water, the blaze was confined to the rear end of the home.
There was heavy smoke and water damage. The home, the former Asai property located between the Cornell and Country Club golf courses, is built of planks and this kept the flames from spreading as rapidly as normally, said Assistant Fire Chief Herman Frantz.
No. 2 Fire Company's truck made the long run via Forest Home, and then called No. 5s for assistance. Each truck is equipped with a 200-gallon booster pump. The water from Cornell arrived about the same time as the second fire truck, and this was pailed into the fire pumpers to keep the booster lines operating.
White said the fire originated back of the kitchen and mushroomed through the roof. All the furniture was carried out of the home when it appeared to be beyond saving."
